According to Forbes, “J. Paul Getty (1892 – 1976) became the richest man in the world after consolidating his oil empire in the U.S. and then striking a major oil deal with Saudi Arabia in the 1960s and 70s. Known as a womanizer, Getty married five times and had five children.”
But although the name Getty was known in relation to oil, our current generation probably knows the name more because of his grandson, Mark Getty, who in 1995 managed to consolidate the stock photography business through Getty Images, which was ultimately sold to private equity firm Hellman & Friedman in 2008 for $2.4 billion.
The family also endured quite some drama’s and one of them is depicted in the new movie ‘All the Money in the world’, which tells the story of the kidnapping case of J. Paul Getty’s other grandson back in 1973.
The film has plenty of high-roller actors, most notably it has Kevin Spacey shining as the old Getty. Although in the trailer he’s shown merely seconds, you can immediately see this will be a towering performance. The other star of the movie is its director, Sir Ridley Scott, but with Sir Ridley you never know.
For every masterpiece like Gladiator, Alien, Thelma and Louise, and Blade Runner, there are complete bombs like The Counselor, Kingdom of Heaven, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and G.I. Jane. As experts say; give him a good script and he’ll be a master, give him a bad one and the film will be bad. David Scarpa penned this movie, and unfortunately, his track record does not provide any hope that this script will be good, but maybe three time’s a charm for Scarpa!
For now, we will remain positive, because the trailer looks damn fine. Enjoy lads.
