Start with describing the situation. The context. The setting. That is step one, make it very clear what scenario you are talking about and what was going on there. Step two; explain to your colleague what it was that they did. Be objective and non-judgmental. Stick to the facts. Don’t assume intentions or reasons, simply share what you observed. Step three; share the impact the other person had with their actions.
The implicit theme throughout Gladiator: No matter how powerful, the pain of a man whose soul has been irreversibly corrupted, far exceeds the pain of a righteous man whose wife and son have been murdered and has been reduced to abject slavery.
We could, of course, explain ourselves and bore you half to death with bombastic adjectives. But we’d rather just show you. We believe that notions of left vs right, liberal vs conservative are outdated and disorienting. Instead, we’re positioned in the second quadrant (Q2) of Eric Weinstein’s Four Quadrant Model. In short: we detest the political correctness and identity politics of Q1, but we refuse to accept that alarmist boomer polemics and the alt-right in Q3 are the only alternatives.
After Peterson appeared on Joe Rogan last year, I decided to watch his lecture series Personality and its Transformations, Maps of Meaning and The Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories. Prety profound stuff, with one central theme: how to be in the world as an individual.
Well fuck us sideways. The 24-year-old Tai Tuivasa (@) from Sydney, Australia, just tactical nuked himself onto our map. We had yet to hear of this heavyweight from down under standing 1.88m tall and weighing in at 120kg, but what has been seen, can’t be unseen: this guy is the new Mark Hunt. The way he found those body shots and kept on connecting was just outlandish, so Dana, give this dude his 50K already man!
In the text below, we’ll summarise the first hour of the lecture “Introduction to the idea of God”, in which Peterson aims to formulate a psychological framework for the emergence and interpretation of the concept of god. Why? Well, because sometimes a fifteen-minute read to absorb and recap beats sitting through a two-hour lecture.
In this lecture, Peterson talks about the concept of ‘authenticity’, which is an important aspect of the existentialist philosophy. The problem, he states, is that most modern people, especially intelligent people, identify themselves with the contents of their intellect. If you can learn concepts on an abstract level, you are able to absorb them in an abstract way and identify yourself with those metaphysical concepts. On the other hand, those ideas are likely to have nothing to do with you as a person.
Lads and ladettes! We’ll be taking a break from publishing this week. We’ve got big plans and they require some concentrated effort on our part. We’ll return to the frey next week! In the meantime, check out the Jordan Peterson live on the Dave Rubin Show, about his new book which is set to launch in January.
Take care and be good!
